RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
