Crew Member Shares Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in various fields.
