Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after the ex-president accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and penalized "by death" following their release of a contentious video.
The Message That Sparked the Dispute
The recorded message, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past served in military or defense capacities.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to protect and support this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our constitution don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that contravene the law or our national charter."
Trump's Furious Reply
The clip appeared to trigger a furious response from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader released a joint announcement denouncing the comments.
"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our country with great loyalty and excellence. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged digital publications and retract his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the declaration stated.
Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We identify as veterans and security experts who value this United States and swore an vow to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will prevent us from that important responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the national charter and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and censure the president's requests for our death and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."
More Governmental Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – regardless of party – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of the government advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is historic in the nation's past."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and decide all that."
White House Statement
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson said. "There are current representatives of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a video message to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's legal commands."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are basically supporting."
