Israeli citizens mark second anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
People have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still were held around the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations met in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the agreement.
A prominent delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The representative said the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, due to differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to close the differences between the both parties.
Essential Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance provision
- Post-war management of the area
Public Feeling
In the city's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No location feels like home now and until each abducted person are released not a single person will be secure."
"Once we see all home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.
In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Protester one woman explained: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that about the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to finish in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the gathering, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the morning of that day in the west side district, sector and locality areas and in the east side district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the night falls, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.
"We are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, clinging, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
Nasser hospital in the south region of that area said another two dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, medical staff said.
