Mikel Arteta Applauds a More Dependable Team and Reveals Kai Havertz Injury Blow.
Mikel Arteta remains confident that his squad can persist in handling with fitness issues after revealing that attacker Kai Havertz will not return for the coming weeks.
Extended Absence for German Star
The Germany international has been out since the summer due to knee surgery. Hoped to be available at the start of this month, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when advancing his rehabilitation and failed to reach “to the next level.”
“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a group that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” Arteta said.
Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash
This news creates a selection headache for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. Arteta must choose between sticking with Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role last weekend, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly off the bench in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also in contention following a lengthy absence.
Fitness Doubts Remain
Additional concerns involve centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Stamford Bridge game. Therefore, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to continue in the backline for the league leaders.
Arteta believes the significant outlay on reinforcements in the last transfer window has placed the club in a much stronger position to navigate such unavailability.
Greater Options Vital for Title Challenge
In response if increased squad depth was aiding their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Absolutely, because this season has been worse in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he noted.
“We learned from the past that we have to use players in various roles, and they must be capable to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at the highest level. And the example of Mikel Merino.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Star
Commenting on the delay highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided more insight. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the next level and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”
He shared his eagerness to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. I mean, he is a footballer who, for me, I admire greatly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his personality. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”
“His fitness history is exceptional, he's usually fit, and I can’t wait to get him back around the team playing because I feel it’s going to be a huge lift.”
