The English Team to Launch the European Championship 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

The English squad will initiate their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they achieve the anticipated passage for a championship hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an English men’s fixture since May 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to host the Three Lions for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.

The English side are scheduled to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning their group, their knockout stage opener would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.

Championship Launch and Rally

The event was unveiled at an event in central London on Wednesday night. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were barracked as they arrived the venue by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel to be removed from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.

Signs were held up with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Schedule

The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will feature Wales if they qualify.

The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be staged on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at late afternoon.

It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will attract households and help reach a broader range of fans.

Qualifying Teams

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would do the same at Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualification process; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that do not reach the tournament through that route.

Locations and Knockout Stage

The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight played at every host’s main arena.

The qualifying draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.

Official Statement

“The event will be a competition for the fans and a showcase of everything we cherish about the sport – its emotion and power to unite individuals.”

Over 3 million admissions, a record for a Euro tournament, are projected to be offered to attendees.
