The Former French President Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Detailing Three Weeks Incarcerated

The ex-president of France will soon publish a personal account this autumn called A Prisoner’s Diary, detailing his experience served in jail.

The revelation was made less than two weeks following the former president was released as he appeals the court ruling on charges of criminal conspiracy in a case to acquire political financing provided by the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail one sees little, and nothing to do,” he reflects in an extract, indicating the account is more about his reflections from isolation as opposed to extensive analysis of the packed and struggling jail system in France.

“Silence escapes me, not present in La Santé, where there is a lot to hear,” he states. “The noise persists relentlessly. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is fortified behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, the former leader had appeared remotely from his cell, characterizing his incarceration as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this ordeal manageable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a hardship forced upon me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as ex-leader of an EU country and the first leader since WWII of France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear whether he had time to review and analyze the volumes he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, a plot where a blameless person ends up incarcerated then breaks out to take revenge.

Daily Reality

The former leader was held secluded due to safety concerns in a cell of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in Paris. Security personnel occupied a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated that he had eaten just yogurt in prison because he feared prison cuisine could have been tampered with. He had facilities to prepare his own meals but refused this, according to reports. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain daily during the incarceration, stated during proceedings his safety would improve released compared to inside. “He received death threats, has heard screaming at night and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

His incarceration began last month following the judiciary imposed a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges related to a plan to acquire campaign funds for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial set for early next year.
