The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
